Chapter Seventeen

The ride was a silent affair. Alex stood in the middle of the car, hands clenched at his sides, eyes staring straight ahead. A small shiver shook his frame and Reese found himself wanting to reach out and draw the other man close to him. Instead, he flexed his neck, trying to ease the tension, one hand massaging the tingling ache at his shoulders. He closed his eyes for a momentary flash. First mistake.

The elevator car came to a jarring stop in that millisecond. His eyelids shot open to find Alex was facing him less than ten inches away. He backed Reese up against the elevator wall.

“What are you doing?” He grabbed Alex by the upper arms and pushed him back, but the man refused to go. Alex heaved himself at Reese, fists buried in the lapels of his suit coat, his full weight pressed to Reese’s trunk and lower limbs.

“I am getting your attention. Apparently, only armed, homicidal gunmen or trained snipers can do it, but I’m going to try the only thing I have available—plain, old-fashioned, physical interaction.” Moving to within a few inches of Reese’s lowered head, Alex stared up into Reese’s face. “Do I have your attention now, Iron Man?”

Eyes bright with anger and frustration, Alex shoved harder, but there was nowhere else to go.

The cold metal of the car’s elegant interior pressed the length of his back, grounding him, reminding him this was real. Alex Throne, gentle, naive, thoughtful, Alex-fucking-Throne was manhandling him to get a reaction. He suspected the guy had to have balls to jump out hog-tied into an ocean, but this was unexpected. And he liked it.

Maybe this was why his Spidey-sense, as Avery called it, worked overtime around Alex. There were hidden facets about the man Reese had yet to learn.

“You have my attention.” He breathed in the scent of the other man, the lingering smells of the club on his clothes, the sight of a small crease of grime on his temple from being pressed into an alley doorway. The fire in his eyes, the grim line of barely-restrained emotion around his lips.

It was the parted bow-shaped lips that held Reese’s attention, the memory of their touch, the heat, their delightful, silky wetness when they kissed, the strength and desire in their firm eagerness. Reese wanted to kiss him again, longer, harder, and not just on the mouth. He wanted to taste every inch of Alex, feel his skin ripple beneath his own lips, trace the lines of his slender body and memorize all the overly-sensitive spots. He might as well admit it, he wanted this man. Needed this sexy, irritating man.

First, he was going to have to get Alex to stop yelling at him.

“How could you do that? How could you calmly walk out alone in front of three men armed with automatic weapons with only a handgun to protect yourself and expect to come out of it alive?”

“Because it’s not my first time handling a situation like this.
